Rings: why aren’t they always recommended for the healing process?

We say it often: rings are not always recommended for an initial piercing. Indeed, in certain cases, it is the appropriate jewelry when talking about the daith piercing or the septum piercing, but it does not apply to all the other piercings. Even though it is not always recommended, it doesn’t mean it is impossible to install one. As long as you understand the risks attached to it, then it’ll be the client’s decision.

The reason why a professional body piercer will say no to a ring is when the client wants something too small for the initial piercing. However, one must not forget an initial piercing swells, and if we put something too snug and inadequate, the risks of complications and problems are enormous. Placement has also a big role in this matter. If we talk about the helix, we first must have to look at the anatomy, and then place in it the ear’s fold. Anything that’s on the flat part of the ear should not have a ring to begin with.

The style of rings are also important to considerate. Most often than not, clients want something simple and dainty, however, for the healing process, having a snug, simple, continuous ring is not recommended. Generally, your piercer will prefer going with either a circular barbell, a captive bead ring or a captive cluster ring.

In addition to being one of these three styles, the ring will have to have a proper diameter to accommodate initial swelling as mentioned above. It’ll avoid the pressure a snug ring can cause on the piercing and the ear in general. It’s also important to take into consideration that the healing process may take a little longer. Even with an appropriate-sized ring, the ring can always cause irritation with movement, whether it’s flipping up and down or turning on itself.

In any case, straight jewelry as well as circular ones are possible, depending on placement and anatomy. The important is to remember that you need an appropriate jewelry, no matter the choice, to promote a trouble-free healing process. If ever you have any questions, contact your piercer so they can guide you through the jewelry choosing process.
