What is the Association of Professional Piercers?

The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) is a nonprofit organization that promotes piercing education and safe practices within the body piercing industry. It is governed by a board of directors that has been elected by their peers and is done so voluntarily. Its members are mostly professional piercers that share information and knowledge about body piercing with other piercers, healthcare professional and the general public.

The APP was founded by Michaela Grey and her colleagues in 1994 in California. Their first members were piercers at the Gauntlet, one of the first modern body piercing studio. This organization is well known across the United States and the majority of its members are there too. However, we can also find members in Canada and all over the world as well.

Each year, the APP organizes a conference / exposition in Las Vegas. This conference offers multiple classes for piercers and apprentices who wishes to perfect their techniques and be at the top of their game for safe practices within the body piercing industry.

On top of organizing those conferences, the APP has members that also present lectures to healthcare professionals as well as attend to health-related seminars. The organization is really staying up to date regarding its standards for safety. When a piercer adheres to the APP, it’s a way of showing that they meet or exceed the standards in place.

Although it brings a lot of positive and great information across the piercing industry, the fact remains that the association isn’t recognized by the law; it does not regulate the entire piercing industry nor does it have laws. It doesn’t teach people how to pierce or how to become a piercer. Being a member does not mean that the piercer is licensed or certified. Being a member simply shows that the standards suggested by the APP are recognized and met by the people adhering to it. After that, a piercer is free to use the techniques they’re most comfortable with, to choose whatever piercing they want to perform and to practice any other body modification that are legally allowed by their country/state/province.
